SA 6 - Encourage more sustainable grazing within the riparian zone

Code
SA 6
Supporting action
Encourage more sustainable grazing within the riparian zone
Description
Inappropriate grazing within the riparian zone can lead to excessive poaching by livestock, thus making riverbanks more prone to erosion and mobilising sediments which could negatively impact water quality. Managing grazing appropriately will reduce this risk of run off and help restore land towards floodplain meadow habitats.
Wider environmental benefits
Increasing woodland cover Improving air quality Improving water quality Increasing flood risk management Reducing climate change impact Supporting health and cultural services Improving soil health Promoting nature friendly farming Supporting food provision

Priority
Natural hydrological functions are restored at a catchment scale
Priority description
Restoration at a catchment scale is particularly important for rivers, water and wetland habitats as these should function together in a connected hydrological network. This would bring about the most significant impacts for biodiversity, water quality, and hydrological regime. Herefordshire’s rivers and wetlands cover a significant proportion of the county and require restoring at this catchment scale to create a resilient and thriving freshwater system.
