PM 40 - Restore and enhance habitats through landscape control of invasive species, pests and pathogens

Code
PM 40
Measure
Restore and enhance habitats through landscape control of invasive species, pests and pathogens
Description
A coordinated program engaging with all stakeholders will be the most effective in tackling the highest risk invasive species, pests, pathogens and diseases, especially those that threaten vulnerable native species and/or impact habitat creation and restoration. This should include an understanding of these threats and how they spread to ensure successful monitoring and control measures can be implemented to improve biosecurity. Climate change is also enabling colonisation of new species in areas where they have not previously been recorded, these should form part of monitoring work. It is important to consider the delivery of habitat measures also poses a risk of introducing or spreading invasive species, pests or pathogens.
Wider environmental benefits
Increasing woodland cover Improving water quality Increasing flood risk management Reducing climate change impact Controlling invasive species

Priority
Ecosystem resilience to invasive species, pests, and pathogens is strengthened
Priority description
Invasive species, pests and pathogens can cause declines in native species populations, which can have subsequent impacts of degrading habitat functions and resilience as their natural balance has been disrupted. Strengthening ecosystems resilience to these threats will ensure they are better protected and can continue to function despite these threats, as well as the overarching pressure of climate change.
