Scrub often develops naturally when areas have been left unmanaged and often suffers from practices to improve and manage other habitats. Management practices to increase species diversity, create a diverse age structure and clearing glades or rides will improve the quality of this habitat. This can include rotational clearing and coppicing to ensure a diversity of age within a scrub habitat, creation of open areas that can be temporary or permanent and introduction of a more diverse mix of shrub species.

Scrub and mosaic habitats may often be overlooked habitats, but they provide vital homes for a diversity of wildlife, and act as important edge and buffer habitat between other habitats, such as woodlands, orchards, or grasslands. Scrub often has dense vegetation cover, which provides ideal nesting habitat for a variety of bird species, as well as providing a nectar source for several invertebrates.
