PM 23 - Create riparian buffers

Code
PM 23
Measure
Create riparian buffers
Description
Riparian buffer zones protect riverbanks and help absorb runoff from adjacent land, thus reducing the amount which enters the watercourse itself. Riparian buffers can consist of a variety of habitat types, including woodland, scrub or grassland, which can support numerous species, as well as support flood management and improve water quality. To maximise these benefits, a 30-metre riparian buffer zone should be prioritised wherever suitable. Areas where riparian buffers can be established should be mapped and zones designed to ensure the most appropriate habitats are created.
Wider environmental benefits
Increasing woodland cover Improving water quality Increasing flood risk management Reducing climate change impact

Priority
Natural hydrological functions are restored at a catchment scale
Priority description
Restoration at a catchment scale is particularly important for rivers, water and wetland habitats as these should function together in a connected hydrological network. This would bring about the most significant impacts for biodiversity, water quality, and hydrological regime. Herefordshire’s rivers and wetlands cover a significant proportion of the county and require restoring at this catchment scale to create a resilient and thriving freshwater system.
