Beaver

Priority species or species assemblage
Beaver
Description
Several species may require reintroductions to support the recovery of their populations in Herefordshire. This involves the deliberate release of the species, either from captivity or areas where populations still remain, to reestablish in areas which it used to inhabit.

Priority
Promote the reintroduction of Beavers where suitable
Priority description
Beavers are considered a keystone species in the UK, able to help restore natural processes and cascade benefits for people and wildlife through wetland creation and slowing the flow, reducing flooding downstream. In February 2025, a landmark policy was published by Defra on the wild release and management of beavers in England. Due to the impact of a Beaver on the local area the reintroduction of any beaver will need to have go through a rigorous consultation to ensure that they will only be released where most appropriate.
