Background context

The Marches Small Equipment Grant was part of the Marches Business Investment Programme (MBIP) and was part financed by the European Regional Development Fund. An independent evaluation has been completed on the MBIP.

The Marches Small Equipment Grant (SEG) is a scheme part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund which is available to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin areas.

Aim of scheme

To create new jobs, boost productivity or develop new products and services within the Marches area.

Outputs and outcomes

Eligible projects must:

  • Lead to the creation of at least one part time job within six months of the equipment being installed and/or
  • Lead to the development of a new product or service to be provided to other businesses

The overall number of  jobs or products and services created will be taken into account when assessing the level of grant awarded. Retrospective applications are not eligible and no work should start until written approval is received.

Who can apply

The grant is primarily available to businesses which trade with other businesses (B2B) and are small to medium-sized enterprises(SME). This means they must:

  • Employ fewer than 250 full time equivalent employees and 
  • Have an annual turnover of less than €50,000,000 or
  • Have a balance sheet of less than €43,000,000
Who is not eligible to apply

Businesses that cannot apply include:

  • Businesses providing goods or services to directly to the consumer (general public)
  • Restaurants, drinking establishments and fast food takeaways
  • Hotel and accommodation providers
  • Online retail or rental businesses
  • Support for farm and farm diversification projects where the end use is agricultural or related to retail
  • Local social welfare providers
  • Public sector organisations
  • Insurance companies and brokers
What the grant or funding is for

New equipment that will create new jobs, boost productivity or develop new products and services.

Each individual item must be equal or exceed £500 in value. Minimum grant award is £1000 - project costs must equal or exceed £2000.

What the grant or funding cannot be used for

Items that cannot be funded with this grant include:

  • Purchase of land or buildings
  • Revenue costs/running costs e.g. Consumables, stationary, salaries etc
  • Stock items
  • Services - solicitor fees, legal insurance
  • Marketing
  • Training
  • Renewable energy installations
  • Corporate responsibility items - H&S, DDA
  • Like for like replacements of obsolete equipment with little or no added value
  • Furniture
  • Computers may be considered for the new employee or in some exceptional circumstances
  • Mobile infrastructure e.g. Vehicles, trailers
  • Items purchase through HP agreements
  • Second hand if not covered by 6 month warranty 
How much you can apply for

Capital grants were available for up to 50 percent of total eligible project costs (to a maximum £10,000) to SMEs to purchase new equipment that will create new jobs, boost productivity or develop new products and services.
