Wildlife and the natural environment

Herefordshire is a county rich in biodiversity, with a variety of habitats supporting nationally important populations of certain species. We are lucky to live in a county where we have lots of green space and beautiful landscapes with a rich and diverse range of wildlife or 'biodiversity'.

Our biodiversity action plans set out our objectives and actions across habitats and species, to protect and manage our county's valued natural environment and ecology.

The nationally important species and habitats listed range from the white clawed crayfish and hazel dormouse to the special habitats of our traditional orchards and ancient hedgerows.

Considering measures to prevent the further decline of species and to enhance habitats will help promote and enhance our county's biodiversity.

Things you can do

  • Report and record wildlife and habitats to the Herefordshire Biological Records Centre and help build our database and widen access to records which can help protect our natural environment
  • Volunteer to care for Herefordshire wildlife with a local group such as Herefordshire Wildlife Trust
  • Consider changes you can make which will improve or protect local natural resources and wildlife, such as creating wild spaces in a garden or choosing to buy goods which are produced in a way which doesn't harm the environment
  • Find out about wildlife crime and how you can report it
  • Invest in environmental projects to offset your own carbon footprint. Find projects at Gold Standard
  • More ideas from around the county
