Working in partnership for the people of Herefordshire

Special Needs

Photo of a horse As a principle, the D of E is open to young people of all abilities. It is committed to offering all young people equal opportunities of access to all activities and events.

The D of E does not provide a single programme of activities for everyone to follow; there is no set standard to be reached. Instead, the young people set a challenge that is relevant to them, and these will be as different as the people that participate. Everyone has an equal chance of success within the activities they choose if they reach the goal they have set for themselves.

As the D of E is designed to allow each individual to choose their activities and take up his or her own personal challenges it is ideally suited to people with Special Needs.

Where participants have individual needs that mean that one or more of the 20 conditions for expeditions cannot be met they must apply for a variation to enable them to complete their D of E Expeditions. Variation Forms are available from the Duke of Edinburgh's Award website
