Residential

Why is this part of the D of E award

This section broadens your experience by taking you outside your normal environment to meet new people in a residential setting.

What do I have to do?

You will normally have a briefing or some training to prepare you for the Residential to allow you to get the most from the experience. You are then ready to undertake a shared activity or course in a residential setting away from home and in an unfamiliar environment.

Because the Residential must be outside your normal environment staying with friends or relatives does not count, neither do trips with School or Youth Club groups - even if you do not know the other people on the trip.

Before you comit yourself to any activity discuss it with your group leader. Then you must gain the Operating Authority's approval for the trip. Download the Approval Form for the Residential Section and post or email it to the Operating Authority to make sure that the Residential qualifies for your award.

What do I get out of it?

The residential is an opportunity to meet new people in an unfamiliar environment, work as part of a team and develop new skills.

For a more information on opportunities for Residential experiences, see the Residential  page of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award website.
