Residential

Why is this part of the D of E award

This section broadens your experience by taking you outside your normal environment to meet new people in a residential setting.

What do I have to do?

You will normally have a briefing or some training before or during the residential period so that you are able to contribute fully and derive full benefit from the experience. You then undertake a shared activity or specific course in a residential setting away from home and in an unfamiliar environment. So staying with friends or relatives is not allowed. Similarly trips with School or Youth Club groups cannot count as a 'Residential,' even if you do not know the other people on the trip.

Once you have discussed the activity with your group leader you must gain the Operating Authority's approval for the trip.

What do I get out of it?

The residential is an opportunity to meet new people in an unfamiliar environment, work as part of a team and develop new skills.

For a more information on opportunities for Residential experiences, see the Residential  page of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award website.
