Getting started as a participant

Photo of athletes lined up at the start of a race Okay, so you've decided to have a go at taking part in an Award programme. What do you do now?

First, find out whether there is a group in a school or youth club near you - visit the award groups in Herefordshire page for a list of groups. If you cannot find a group near you can always join the Herefordshire Open Award Group which operates across the county. For more information visit the Herefordshire Open Award Group page, or contact dofeaward@herefordshire.gov.uk

The group leader will help you decide whether you should try for the Bronze, Silver or Gold level of the Award. You can start your D of E at any of these Levels. A lot of people decide to take on the Bronze first and move on to the other levels over time, while many of the older participants dive straight in at Gold level. Remember that the higher the level, the more time and work you'll have to put in.

You will need to fill in a registration form and pay a participation fee to enrol on the scheme. You can download the form from the resources box below. Your parent or guardian will also have to sign the form.

The fees for 2009/20010 are:
Bronze - £11.50
Silver - £11.50
Gold - £17.25

When you have your record book, you can start to choose activities for each of the sections. The sections are Volunteering, Skill, Physical and Expedition, with a fifth Residential at Gold level.
