The expedition is designed to encourage adventure and discovery by taking part in a journey as part of a team.
With advice from your Group leader, you have to plan and execute a journey by your own physical efforts with minimal external intervention. The journey may take place on land - by foot, cycle, horse, etc. or on water - by canoe, sail, rowing, boat etc. without motorised assistance.
You can only complete this activity as a member of a team. As all ventures must be a team effort, you have to recognise the needs and strengths of others, and support each other to ensure success. You will have to agree on decisions and accept the consequences.
Before the final venture, you will have to complete a programme of training and undertake practice journeys and a qualifying venture.
Some participants choose to take part in an 'exploration' rather than an expedition. Explorations present a different challenge, less time is spent travelling, and more on studying and understanding the area in which they are travelling.
Most people say that taking part in an expedition is the highlight of their Award. It gave their self-confidence a boost, developed leadership skills, and gave them experiences that they will always remember.
For details of the exact requirements for each award, see the Bronze, Silver and Gold Award pages.
