Expedition

Why is this part of the D of E award?

The expedition is designed to encourage adventure and discovery by taking part in a journey as part of a team.

What do I have to do?

With advice from your Group leader, you have to plan and execute a journey by your own physical efforts. The journey may take place on land - by foot, cycle, or horse, or on water - by canoe, sail, or rowing boat. But you can not use motorised assistance!

You can only complete this activity as a member of a team. On expedition you must be self-reliant, you can not get help from anybody outside your team. As all ventures must be a team effort, you have to recognise the needs and strengths of others, and support each other to ensure success. You will have to agree on decisions and accept the consequences.

You will receive all the training you need, and undertake some practice journeys before the final qualifying expedition.

What do I get out of it?

Most people say that taking part in an expedition is the highlight of their D of E. It gave their self-confidence a boost, developed leadership skills they did not know they had, and gave them an experience they will always remember.

For details of the exact requirements for each award, see the Bronze, Silver and Gold Award pages.
