The Youth Funding Panel manage the Youth Opportunity and Capital Funds

We have been allocated an additional £450,000 of funding over the next 3 years, ending March 2011.

The first panel meeting to consider applications will be during the week commencing 26 MAY 2008. So Please get the applications in as soon as they are ready! We will then meet up every few weeks to discuss applications so you can apply at any time.

We have been busy re-designing a new application a new application form and putting together new criteria & guidance notes. Please make sure you read the new guidance notes that come with the application form.

Please note: we will be looking to support projects that clearly demonstrate they are:

• Young person led and realistic
• Clearly show us - how young people have generated the ideas, developed the project and written the bid and how they will continue to be involved. We don't want to see applications made by adults with a young persons signature on the end! It has to be young people's ideas (supported by adults).
• Clearly needed and well thought out.
• Going to make a difference and will benefit young people's - skills, knowledge and will be fun etc!
• Likely to benefit others (not just the applicant group) and as many young people as possible.
• Value for money.
• Willing to collect ongoing project evidence.
• Additionally, applications from disadvantaged young people and new groups/projects will be given priority.

Herefordshire Youth Funding Panel

The aim of the funds is to give a voice and influence to young people (13-19yrs), particularly disadvantaged young people. The funds must involve young people in identifying and deciding on a range of positive activities for themselves and their peers. The projects supported are those that will give young people things to do and places to go, in line with Every Child Matters five outcomes of: staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, economic well- being and making a positive contribution.

Young people get a kick out of sport in Ledbury

Young people in Ledbury can try a huge range of traditional and alternative sports including kick boxing, over the next 12 weeks thanks to the council's youth service.

Following discussions with young people in Ledbury Youth Centre and neighbouring John Masefield High School, the youth service and Ledbury Youth First have put together a unique programme of sporting events with funding from Awards for All. Although the programme has only just begun, mountain biking, kayaking and archery sessions have already proved to be a great success.

Over the next few weeks 11-19 year olds will have the chance to try kick boxing, dodge ball, golf and cheerleading as well as more traditional activities like table tennis and volleyball.

During half term there will be a unique opportunity to attend a day long Street Dance workshop by Urban Edge and they can look forward to mountain boarding in Cradley and Climbing in Gloucester once the new half term begins in June.

All the events are free and involve local professionals providing tuition. Transport is also provided where necessary.

Events include Kick boxing on April 23rd, Archery on April 30th, Dodge ball on May 7th, Golf at the Hereford Gold Academy on May 14th and Cheerleading on May 21st. On May 28th during half term, there will be a day long street danced workshop from 10-4pm. In the new half term there will be climbing in Gloucester on June 4th, Mountain boarding in Cradley on June 11th, table tennis on June 25th, ultimate Frisbee on June 25th and Volleyball on July 2nd with a possible further kayaking course scheduled for July.

Councillor Jenny Hyde, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "The council is working hard with its partners to improve the range of positive activities available to the county's young people.

"This twelve week project sounds great fun - it offers a range of activities that will appeal to a broad audience. Not everyone is into traditional sports, so I'm delighted to see alternatives such as cheerleading and mountain boarding on the menu. The fact that the young people have been involved in deciding which events they'd like to have a go at is great too. I hope that newcomers will take the opportunity to participate in some of the activities and meet new people."
