After a short freeze, due to the new government coming into power, the Herefordshire Youth Funding Panel is ready to accept grant applications again for new youth led projects and activities!
The Opportunity Fund is for 'activities' and things to do (from £50 up to £4,500). The Youth Capital Fund is for 'things' e.g. facilities, buildings and equipment (from £1,000 up to £15,000).
All projects need to be youth led, not adult/organisation led!! Adults can support young people but all projects and applications must be brought forward and led by young people themselves.
A project must benefit young people in Herefordshire and should meet at least 1 of the Every Child Matters Outcomes. Projects within school curriculum time or part of normal school provision cannot be supported.
The Youth Opportunity and Capital Funds aim to give a voice and influence to young people (13-19 years) by fully involving them in identifying, deciding and leading on a range of positive activities for themselves and their peers.
Applications must be received by 29th September 2010 by completing a YOF application form. All projects must be completed by 28th February 2011. The new YOF form can be downloads from http://www.herefordshireyouthcouncil.co.uk/

Chrissie Cobourn on 01432 383008 e-mail ccobourn@herefordshire.gov.uk or Helen Tong on 01432 260753 e-mail delegatedgrants@herefordshire.gov.uk.
Due to proposed Government Savings of £6bn the above funding has been put at risk for this financial year. The Youth Funding Panel have therefore made the difficult decision to put the scheme on hold until a firm commitment to fund has been received from Government Office. Grant offers already made for 2010/11 will be honoured.
You will be contacted immediately once we have further information. In the meantime, if you wish to speak to someone about funding please contact the Herefordshire Council Delegated Grants Team on 01432 260753.
"When it's the middle of December and it gets dark about half past two, and rain's coming down horizontal and it's so cold that the dog goes home - you think, crikey, why the hell am I doing this?" Richard
"Any community is competing on global level. Our lamb is affected by New Zealand, for example. If they had a crash in their market it would affect our prices here." Christine
"Growing up here, according to my mum, we'd be out in our prams in the middle of lambing. We've always been outside whether we've known it or not. But growing up here has been really great because you've got the open space so we've been allowed to run free on the whole." Fay
"We've been four years in the caravan through the Winters which are extremely cold. But I'm not prepared to give up on my farming dream." Millsy - trying to get planning permission to build a dwelling on his farmland.

More than 400 young people in Hereford are set to start a Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme this year, more than ever before.
The Country has seen a big increase in the number of young people taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award nationally, with the number of teenagers taking part going up by 20% in the last two years.
Herefordshire has been part of this increase with the record numbers signing up for the Award which is managed by Herefordshire Council.
Mal Mason, said: "Each of the three levels of the Award recognise commitment, initiative and teamwork - exactly the qualities employers are looking for. We all know the job market is extremely competitive at the moment, and as well as qualifications, any activities which can set you apart from the next applicant is very beneficial. I have even heard of employers saying they always look for candidates with a Duke of Edinburgh Award when they are recruiting."
As well as giving young people a great qualification and many experiences to add to their curriculum vitae, the Duke of Edinburgh Award is fun to do and anyone can join. You don't need any qualifications to start, and training and guidance are provided for you all along the way.

Herefordshire Council's outdoor education facilities in Bodenham and Hereford have been given the thumbs up by Peter Hill, inspector for the Adventure Activities Licensing Service (AALS).
The outdoor education team has been awarded an adventure activities license which covers activities at Bodenham Lake Sailing Centre and the Canoe Centre in Hereford. The inspector was very impressed with the standard of equipment, the professionalism of the staff and the facilities on offer. As a result, the license was awarded for two years - the maximum length of this type of license.
In addition the Bodenham Sailing Centre passed its annual Royal Yachting Association inspection and will be upgraded to a sailability centre, a centre specially designated to people with a variety of needs.
Andy Preedy from Herefordshire Council Youth Service said: 'We have an excellent outdoor education team who provide lots of activities for young people in the school holidays. During term time they work with schools to provide kayaking and canoeing opportunities for school pupils of all ages and abilities'.
At the time of the Bodenham Centre inspection a number of access 303 boats where on the lake, these boats are designed for people with special needs and were being used by pupils from Barrs Court School .
Access boats provide great opportunities for pupils with special needs to try out new activities, enjoy the great outdoor environment and participate in sport. The inspector was so impressed that he reported back to the RYA who now want the centre to become a sailability centre, a great accolade locally and regionally.
There is a lot on the news about mobs of yobs terrorising the gentle folk of Britain and not a lot about the decent young people who do good things. We've decided this needs to change and that there needs to be a bit of fuss made about the good stuff instead of the bad. Believe it or not, there are lots of fantastic projects out there that young people are getting on quietly (mostly) with around the county so, as a bit of a trumpet blowing ceremony, Herefordshire Youth Awards supported by Herefordshire Council and PCT are holding a celebration event for young people of this county. An evening will be held on the 12th July 2010 during Shine Week in order to thank these charitable, hard-working youths.
HCVYS (Herefordshire Council for Voluntary Youth Service) will also be nominating one individual award and one group award. If there is a young person or group that you feel deserves a bit of recognition and an award, please contact Herefordshire Youth Awards at hfdyouthawards@googlemail.com , please put the subject of the email as NOMINATIONS or ring 01432 383008 for further information. To nominate a young person or group for a HCVYS award please contact 01432 277822 or email admin@herefordshirecvys.org.uk. The deadline for nominations if Friday 2nd July 2010 at 5pm.
For a nomination and continuation form please click on the link at the bottom of the page.
I'll start by giving you a brief idea of what you're going to gain within the next year. When I first started I had absolutely no paddling experience whatsoever, in fact I don't know how I ended up getting the job. I am now leaving with a 3 star award and level 1 coaching in both Canoe and Kayak, level 2 Sailing award, a level 1 powerboat qualification, a mountain first aid qualification and a Level 1 Youth Work qualification which is pretty cool. But it's not just about the different qualifications you will achieve but also the experience you will gain working with different types of young people and learning different ways in which you can meet their needs no matter what they are. Also you might get the chance to go to the Ardeche in the South of France, if you get this chance then don't turn it down as it is an amazing experience.
The people that you are going to be working with are probably the best people you will ever work with so don't be nervous around them. Also they have a vast amount of experience between them so you're going to learn lots of different ways of coaching and helping out young people. Just what ever you do don't keep asking them if there's anything you can do as you will always get the same answer 'my car's outside it could do with a clean' ....... it never gets old!!
So there you go. This really is a fantastic job and if I was to be honest I don't want to leave. Thanks to this experience I now know that I want a career in outdoor education and have decided to go to university this September and gain even more knowledge for coaching and gain further qualifications in different sports so that I can do what I love everyday.
Enjoy yourself
Joe Chillington
Young people in Herefordshire are being given the opportunity to inspect the services they receive and recommend changes to how they are provided in the future.
Herefordshire Council has been given the thumbs up to run a new programme for young inspectors called Youth4U. The programme aims to give young people the chance to look at services available in their area and tell the people in charge of them what they think. It is being run by the Look Listen Change consortium which is made up of the National Children's Bureau (NCB), the British Youth Council (BYC) and KIDS Charity.
This programme is for 13 to 19 year olds (or disabled young people up to the age of 25) who, because of their background or life experiences, haven't had the opportunity to speak out and get their views heard.
They will be trained to look at anything from information, advice and guidance services at schools and colleges, to transport, health services, sport and leisure facilities or youth and community services
As well as gaining valuable training, they will be paid £75 for each inspection they undertake, and have the opportunity to achieve a national accreditation too.
Andy Preedy, Herefordshire Council, said: "The purpose of the programme is to increase the number and quality of opportunities for young people living in Herefordshire to influence services and activities that they access. It's also to help young people to connect with their peers and shape local policies and services across a wide range of areas including health, transport and community services
"This is a great opportunity for 13-19 year olds to get involved in assessing local services and make a real difference to the way they are provided in the future."
To get the programme started, Herefordshire Council is looking for ten young people for the first round of training and inspections which will begin before Christmas. Anyone wishing to nominate a young person who appears to fit the bill is encouraged to get in touch with the council's youth involvement team on 01432 383008.
The Youth Survey 2007 was a postal survey to a sample of 13-18 year olds in Herefordshire.
