Traffic Signals

Traffic signals are used to safely control the movement of vehicles at complex junctions in order to maximise traffic flow, and provide for a safer means for pedestrians to cross the road. There are approximately 19 junctions with traffic signals, and 39 pedestrian crossings in Herefordshire giving a total of over 1550 separate traffic lights. Herefordshire Council are responsible for the majority of these signals, with those located on the A40 and A49 Trunk Roads being maintained by agents for the Highways Agency.

The signals are maintain by Telent who are the Council's term contractor. Any faults, such as signals all out, bulbs not working or lights stuck on red etc., should be reported to the Council's Network Management Team on 01432 260945 or e-mailed to streets@herefordshire.gov.uk. Serious faults should be attended with 2 hours and non-serious within 24 hours. Faults may not be able to be rectified immediately.

Most of the signals are capable of self diagnosis and report their faults directly to the Councils Network Management team.

Faults on the A40 and A49 Trunk Roads should be reported directly to the agents for the Highways Agency on 0121 254 1300.

Temporary Traffic Signals

Temporary (portable) Traffic Signals are used whenever there is a need to manage traffic whilst work is carried out on the highway. A licence is needed to place portable traffic signals on any section of public road.

Problems relating to portable traffic signals should in the first instance be reported to the company on whose site they are operating, by calling the number on the site information board. If this is not successful please ring 01432 261800.
