The service is responsible for precautionary gritting and snow clearance on all of the county's roads with the exception of trunk roads. The decision on whether to salt the roads is based on regularly updated weather forecasts and information from six special weather stations located across the county. The quantity of salt being spread is carefully controlled to be effective without causing unnecessary damage to verges, trees and watercourses. Roadside grit heaps and bins are provided where requested by Parish Councils to provide cover on minor roads which might not otherwise be treated.
A leaflet has been produced detailing the Winter Gritting routes - this can be downloaded in PDF format by clicking on the first two links at the bottom of the page. The major towns have also been made available in individual, more detailed files, which are also available at the bottom of the page.
If you would like a copy of the leaflet please contact us on 01432 261800 and we will send you one. Paper copies of the leaflet are available from the Info Offices and Libraries in the market towns, the Town Hall, Brockington, Garrick House, Bath Street Offices, Blueschool House Offices and the Library in Hereford. Copies have also been distributed to petrol stations across the county.
