Public Rights Of Way

There are 4,415 registered public rights of way in
Herefordshire, ranging from a few metres to several kilometres
in length. The county's path network covers over 3,360km
and is managed and maintained by Amey Herefordshire on behalf
of Herefordshire Council.
There are four categories of public rights of way:
Footpath
A public footpath may be used for walking. You are allowed to take your dog provided it is kept under control at all times. Wheelchairs and pushchairs are permitted where conditions allow.
The route of a footpath is indicated by a yellow arrow or the 'walking man' symbol.
On a footpath you may encounter gates, kissing gates and stiles.

Bridleway
A public bridleway may be
used for walking and riding / leading a horse. Cycling is
permitted, providing cyclists give way to pedestrians and horse
riders. Bridleways are indicated by blue
waymarkers or the horse and rider symbol.
Bridleways are stile and kissing gate free, you may
however encounter bridle and/or field gates.

Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT)
Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT)
A Byway can be used for walking, riding/leading a horse or
cycling. There is also a right of use for any kind of wheeled
vehicle, including motor cars and horse-drawn vehicles.
Indicated by a red arrow.
You may occasionally encounter a field gate when using a byway
open to all traffic.

Restricted Byway
(Formerly known as 'RUPPs') a Restricted Byway can be used for
walking and riding/leading a horse. Non-mechanically
propelled vehicles such as cycles and horse drawn vehicles may
also use these routes, which are indicated by a
purple arrow.
You may occasionally encounter a field gate when using a
restricted byway.
