Leisure cycling

To the south of the county is Sustrans' Peregrine Path running between Symonds Yat and Monmouth. Alternatively leaflets may be ordered free of charge from Sustrans, tel: 0845 113 0065.

In the Forest of Dean the Forestry Commission trails are well signposted.
There is the 11 mile Family Cycle Trail, and more details are available at Pedalabikeaway's web site where they also have details on hiring bikes at their locations in the forest and more recently on the Peregrine Path.

The Forest of Dean Cycle Association also organise kids mountain bike races.

Other ride information is available at our tourist information centres (TIC) including two
cider routes in the county. They usually have copies of the "Cycles and Spires: Easy cycle routes to historic churches" leaflets which include rides around Leominster, Tenbury Wells, and Cleobury Mortimer.

Forestry Commission also have a number of cycle trails at Hopton Wood (GR334820E 277770N).

Rough Rides have some off-road suggestions.

As well as the National Cycle Network routes we are developing with Sustrans (see our cycling schemes page), the National Byway route between Chester and Cirencester passes through the county from Ludlow in Shropshire, and Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. The Herefordshire section takes in Leominster and Ledbury and you can get more details of the route on the National Byway web site.

The main point of contact for mountain biking is via the International Mountain Biking Association's website. There are four published routes in East Herefordshire on the Malverns Offroad Cycling Map (West) available from Hereford TIC or through the IMBA shop and two on-road routes feature in their 'By Bike in the Foothills of the Malverns' online leaflet.
You may also use the stoned tracks in Haugh Wood near Mordiford (GR359500E 236500N), and IMBA has a number of unpublished bridleway routes in the county.
Routes suitable for mountain biking in neighbouring Powys are described by Rough Rides.

Finally, the emergence of web based mapping sites like Google maps has seen the development of home grown cycle rides. You can publish your own routes on them to share with other cyclists too. See these links to Bikely and Ordnance Survey websites.
