Cycling policy

The council's cycle strategy is enshrined in two documents:

The Local Transport Plan 2
Covering 2006-2011, this document not only describes the council's road user hierarchy, but Chapter 9 describes all the transport policy statements.
9 Deals with Increasing Sustainable Transport
9.2 specifically deals with Cycling Strategy
Chapter 10 details delivery.

Also relevant is the Unitary Development Plan which was adopted 23 March 2007 and also runs to 2011. Chapter 8 deals with transport and Section 8.5 deals with Rail and includes the T5 policy on safeguarding former railway lines for sustainable transport while Section 8.7 is specific to cycling.

Cycling also features in our Highways Design Guide for New Developments  issued in 2006, covering the transport heirarchy, Design Policies, Criteria, and parking standards with appendices covering the relevant council UDP policies. For more details follow the Highways and Development link in the box on the right.

National cycling policy
For information on the Government's cycling aims and information and contact details for the different organisations that are responsible for the management and delivery of particular areas of cycling policy see the Department for Transport's web pages.

Strategies for promoting cycling as an alternative form of transport for local journeys are available from the DfT's Cycling page.

The Department also publishes a number of Traffic Advisory Leaflets on cycle facilities.
