Rights of Way Improvement Plan

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 introduced the requirement for local highway authorities to prepare and publish rights of way improvement plans. The deadline for this is within five years of the commencement of the Act which is November 2007.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has indicated that rights of way improvement planning should be incorporated into the local transport planning process from 2005 onwards and, whilst we are awaiting specific guidance from the Department of Transport, it is our aim to incorporate the Plan with the next Local Transport Plan.

The Government has issued statutory guidance to highway authorities on how to complete the ROWIP process, and there are a number of key stages including information gathering, evaluation and consultation. Please click the link below for the statutory guidance.

Please click the link below (labelled, "Consultation") for further details regarding the Council's consultation on the Rights of Way Improvement Plan.
