Centre of Excellence

Centre of Excellence Logo Herefordshire Council's first Local Transport Plan was published in July 2000. It set out an ambitious countywide strategy to deliver improvements over the five financial years 2001/2 to 2005/6. Over this period, the Council delivered a wide range of successful transport measures, many of which have continued or been built upon for our second Local Transport Plan strategy. Improvements were made to facilities for disabled people, pedestrians, cyclist and public transport users. Great strides were also made in tackling road safety problems on the County's roads through highway improvements, safer routes to school and education campaigns. In addition, significant investment was targeted at highway and bridge maintenance to ensure these important assets remain fit for purpose.

As a result of successfully delivering the first Local Transport Plan, the Department for Transport designated Herefordshire, alongside only 16 other areas, as a Centre of Excellence in Local Transport Delivery. Herefordshire was particularly commended for improving road safety and public transport. Our Local Transport Plan Delivery Report, published in 2005, summarises what has been achieved during the first Local Transport Plan period and highlights our success in meeting our transport targets.

We have produced a resource pack to highlight some of the successful initiatives we have delivered and share our experience with other authorities. The pack contains eleven case studies clearly and attractively presented to explain what was done, the outcomes and benefits to local people, together with practical advice for those considering developing similar projects.

You can download the Centre of Excellence resource pack, or if you prefer, hard copies are available by emailing your request to streets@herefordshire.gov.uk .
