Widemarsh and High Street Experimental Pedestrianisation

Following public consultation the Council decided to introduce an experimental pedestrianisation scheme in Hereford city centre between June and December 2005. The scheme affected Widemarsh Street (south of the ring road) and High Street and these roads were closed to traffic between 10.30am and 4.30pm each day.

Extensive consultation and monitoring was carried out during the experiment. Reports detailing the results of the consultation and monitoring can be downloaded below.

The Council's Cabinet considered these results and determined the future of the scheme at its meeting on 26th January 2006. Agenda papers for this cabinet meeting are posted on the website and can be found via the Home Page and choosing the link to "Council, Government and Democracy".

Prior to the introduction of the experimental scheme, research was undertaken on Widemarsh Street during the temporary closure in summer 2004 when new gas pipes were being laid.  This research found that the majority of people wanted pedestrianisation of some kind on Widemarsh Street.  The results of this consultation can also be downloaded below.
