Gender Equality Scheme

Herefordshire Council’s first Gender Equality Scheme (GES) is now in place as part of the Gender Equality Duty.

The duty requires all public authorities to promote gender equality and eliminate sex discrimination and to have a GES in place by 6 April 2007.  It also places a legal responsibility on public authorities to demonstrate that they treat men and women fairly.  This will work alongside the Race Equality and Disability Equality Schemes. The specific duty for the GES differs from the requirements in the Race Relations Act and Disability Discrimination Act in that all public authorities are required to comply, in the same way, with the same duties.
