Sexual Orientation

The key challenges for Herefordshire Council in respect of promoting equality and challenging discrimination for lesbian, gay and bisexual people are:
  • Addressing prejudice
  • Addressing homophobic abuse
  • Access to information, support and services
  • Becoming an employer of choice
  • Clarifying and implementing an approach to monitoring

The Corporate Diversity Team supports individuals who have experienced discrimination, bullying or harassment for many different reasons, including their sexual orientation.  We can provide guidance and support, and signpost people to individuals or organisations who can provide specialist advice.  If you have been the victim of a hate crime, we would recommend that you report it to the police with whom we have a close working relationship, and we can support you through this process.

We are also keen to hear from people who can suggest ways in which the Council can better deliver its services to Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual people.

The team supports an LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Employee Group for Council employees who are keen to help the authority improve the way in which they support the LGBT community, deliver services, and recruit and retain staff.

The Council has also supported the development of the local LGBT group, the Rainbow Forum, and its website, which can be found at www.rainbowforum.co.uk.  This gives details of events, activities and support.
