Gender

The key challenges for the Council in respect of promoting gender equality are:
  • Domestic violence, both men and women
  • Equal pay
  • Women and employment
  • Transport – safety, accessibility and appropriate routes
  • Teenage pregnancy
  • Sexual health
  • Trans men and trans women
  • Flexible working practices for men and women who are carers or have childcare responsibilities

The Corporate Diversity Team supports individuals who have experienced or are experiencing discrimination, bullying or harassment for many different reasons, including their gender. This category of crime is called a hate crime.  We can provide guidance and support, and signpost people to individuals or organisations that provide specialist advice and support.  If you have been the victim of a hate crime we would recommend that you report it to the police.  We can, if you wish, support you through this process.

The council supports an LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Employee Group for employees who are keen to help the authority improve the way in which they support the LGBT community, deliver services, and recruit and retain staff.

The council also supports the Rainbow Forum, a local LGBT group, and its website, which can be found at http://www.rainbowforum.co.uk/.  This gives details of events, activities and support.
