What should I do when it floods?

Don't underestimate the danger involved with a flood.  Floodwater can be very dangerous; six inches of fast-flowing water can knock you off your feet; two feet can sweep away a car.

While Herefordshire Council endeavours to provide assistance wherever possible, it is your responsibility to protect your person and property.

The Environment Agency has produced information on its website giving practical advice on what to do to stay safe in a flood.

Flooding can have a devastating effect on property. Not only may flood water be contaminated with oil, silt and even sewage, but it can be dangerous as even six inches of fast-flowing water can knock you off your feet. It is important that on returning to a flooded property that you follow some simple guidelines to reduce the impact of what can be a very stressful time.

The Environment Agency website contains details on what to do after a flood and how to effectively clean up, dry out, restore and repair a home after flooding, together with details of organisations that can offer information, support and practical help in the clean up operation.
