Update 01.05.12
The great explosion of spring wildflowers is drawing to a close with a grand finale as the masses of bluebells on the eastern side of Queenswood come into full bloom. The early-flowering wood anemones, dog violets and primroses are starting to fade, to be replaced by wild arum, herb Robert, cuckooflower, stitchwort and red campion.
The first orchids are also now in flower; look for early purple, greater butterfly and bird's nest orchid. Bird's-nest orchid is an unusual plant in that it produces no chlorophyll, has no leaves and cannot photosynthesise. Instead it relies on a relationship with soil fungi for all of its food. The plants lack of strong colour makes it particularly hard to spot amongst the dead leaves and bracken. In contrast, early purple orchids have striking pink/purple flowers and long lance-like leaves, which are frequently spotted.
After a very promising start in March, the cold, wet weather during April has sent the early butterflies scurrying for cover and will possibly have a serious effect on numbers later in the year. The rangers are conducting a weekly survey throughout the spring and summer to monitor butterfly numbers, as part of a national monitoring scheme organised by Butterfly Conservation.
In the arboretum, the cherries and magnolias have largely finished flowering and the Japanese maples are coming into leaf, producing a subtle reflection of their glorious autumn colours, with delicate yellows, greens and oranges. The tall woodland trees, oak, ash and beech, are also coming into leaf, which signals a dramatic change in the character of the wood, as the canopy closes over and light levels fall.
