  • Edward Ardizzone was one of Britain best loved illustrators. He made his first book illustrations in 1929 and illustrated over 180 books and contributed to many more during his career.
  • During the 19th century the emergence of the independent and emancipated woman with increased leisure time saw a greater involvement in a wide range of sporting activity. As competitiveness increased so did the need to adapt the fashion to being functional and practical. The session will look at the examples of sportswear from the collection.
  • Robin Thorndyke has relocated the places in which Brian Hatton painted many of his landscapes and farming scenes, in the quiet countryside of Warham and Breinton, a century ago. Illustrated with Brian's paintings from the museum collection and Robin's contemporary photographs, stories and interpretation.
  • A basic introduction to Winterbourn, Watkins, Morgan and others. This lecture will look at the technology available to these pioneers of photography in Hereford, who were instrumental in capturing and freezing moments in time. We will see the recent discoveries of images taken by these photographers that enable us to find out more about our Victorian and Edwardian past in the County.
  • Drawing on the collection of Garrick's papers at the museum, Dr. Pinches will set David Garrick in the context of the theatrical life of the eighteenth century. The papers reflect the public life of this celebrity, but also show him and his wife in their domestic setting. Some of Garrick's documents will be displayed and used in the workshop.
  • Charles Rennie Mackintosh is well-known for his work in Scotland. This lecture will look in detail at one of his last architectural commissions - in England! - setting it in the context of his other work. It will also examine how 78 Derngate was meticulously restored and opened to the public.
  • Archaeologically speaking, what the Malvern Hills lack in quantity, they more than make up for in quality. As we consider archaeological finds from the Museum's collections, place-names and Anglo-Saxon charters, we will build a picture of an ancient landscape that has served as a boundary for more than 3000 years.
  • John Ward was born in Hereford and spent his formative years here. He greatly appreciated the schooling and art training he had here, acquiring skills which he used in adult life. The museum has a collection of his work which is little known - some works have been given by Ward himself and others by a local donor. This session will explore his origins here and review the work in the context of his later career.
  • An historical look at jewellery-making techniques with close-up demonstrations by a silver-smith jeweller. Using examples mainly from the archaeology collections to investigate different methods of manufacture, the jeweller will show how it was done. Wire drawing and twisting, drilling and piercing, engraving and forming, enamelling and inlaying. Discover the techniques used in making the Staffordshire hoard and get an inside look into the delicate craft of the jeweller. Please bring a packed lunch with you for this workshop.
  • Exploring the connections between Herefordshire and the transatlantic slave trade. From John Hawkins to the abolitionists; what are Herefordshire's links with 200 years of transatlantic slavery? See your county's history in a new light. Illustrated with archive records and objects from the museum's collections.
  • Herefordian Thomas Andrew Knight (1759 - 1838) was a Fellow of the Royal Society and awarded its highest accolade, the Copley medal. A founder member of The Three Counties Agricultural Society, early member of the Ludlow Natural History Society and the second president of what is now the Royal Horticultural Society. This seminar will explore the background to his life and times and local connections. A further related day trip will visit Wormesley Church, an historic orchard and look at some of the fruit species he cultivated. Led by James Bisset. Date, cost and itinerary to be confirmed.
