Digging up the Romans

Investigating our local area: using aerial photographs

This session uses fantastic resources such as original Roman artefacts and top quality replicas to help children find out about Romans locally.

Children will:
  • Become trainee archaeologists
  • Excavate pieces of broken pottery and rebuild a pot in teams
  • Explore an aerial photograph of Kenchester Roman town and an artists illustration of the site
  • Identify original Roman pottery
  • Grind herbs in a mortaria and decipher Roman writing on a wax tablet
  • Dress their teacher in a toga
