What was it like for children living in Victorian Britain?
Links to the Literacy strategy years 5 and 6 Non-fiction:Letter writing

This is a session based on an exploration of what life was like for country children in Victorian times. Children will learn about life as it might have been for their own ancestors living in a rural county.

Children will:
  • Have a go with an original bird scarer
  • Try on country smocks and bonnets
  • Find out why Ernest Simpkins is absent and what the teacher thinks about that!
  • Read original Victorian absence notes from Hope Under Dinmore School, 1876
  • Use dipper pens and ink to write their own excuses
