Dig That!

Exciting archaeological discoveries have been happening in Herefordshire:

The recent discovery of the 4,000 year old serpentine monument on the path of the Rotherwas relief road, has hit the headlines as the Rotherwas Ribbon.

Then there is the massive Pipeline excavation cutting through swathes of land, uncovering a range of sites of human activity. A new display case in the Museum entrance contains more information on this.

In Hereford City itself a large excavation by the Swimming pool has investigated part of the medieval defensive earthwork, most notably used during the Civil War.

Crystal Rooms nightclub has become a large building site revealing buildings from the Medieval to Victorian town and including the Kings Ditch.

Saxon activity has recently been found in the basement at Marks and Spencers; and archaeology at Gaol Street has produced, amongst many things, a fine bone peg used on a medieval musical instrument and the bones of a medieval bear which presumably had been used for entertainment.

2007 has been a busy year for archaeologists and it is only half way through!

Archenfield Archaeology, Archaeological Investigations, Herefordshire Archaeology, Worcestershire Historic Environment and Archaeology Service, & Network Archaeology have undertaken this work on behalf of various contractors. Thanks to all for providing the information.

Heritage Open Days 11 - 14 September 2008

Heritage Open Days are a national event that has been running for several years. The idea of the days is to allow free access to interesting and historic buildings and museums that either aren't normally open to the public or would normally charge an admission fee.

For the second year running, Herefordshire Heritage Services is acting as the local county co-ordinator for the events, bringing the people running open days together and producing a combined county schedule and nearer the time a joint publicity leaflet.

So what will be happening? Herefordshire events will be happening from Friday 12th September to Sunday 14th and will include activities in Ledbury, Leominster, Ross-on-Wye and Hereford. So far the following events are planned, look out for further details on the Heritage Open Days web site
