Identification and Conservation

a photo of a full skirted blue dress from the museum collection We have specialist collections officers who study and record the collections. These include:
  • social history
  • natural history
  • geology
  • archaeology
  • fine and decorative arts
  • photographs
  • costume and textiles

Most of our collections particularly relate to Herefordshire.

Collections staff offer an identification service for objects but are not able to value items.

Archaeological items, especially those found in the county, can be brought along to the monthly "Archeological Artefacts Identification Days" with Herefordshire's Finds Liaison Officer - check the events listing for dates. Other types of objects can be brought to Hereford Museum or preferably the Museum Resource & Learning Centre and passed to the relevant member of staff..

Staff can offer basic advice on caring for objects. Specialist conservation advice or finding a specialist conservator is best done through the national on-line Conservation Register.
