The writer and historian Catherine Beale will give an illustrated talk about the Arkwright family of Hampton Court Herefordshire as depicted in her brilliantly researched book Champagne and Shambles. The event is on Saturday 13th March 3pm - 4:30pm. Tickets £5 available on the door. Refreshments and books will be on sale.
Champagne and Shambles is the true story of Johnny Arkwright and his Hampton Court Estate, once the largest estate in Herefordshire.
From the processions and balls which celebrated his coming of age, to facing financial ruin at his own son's birthday and the eventual sale of the estate, this book charts the downfall of the landed classes in a most fascinating and readable way.
A set of this book is also available for readers' groups to borrow - contact Anne-Marie on 01432 260646 amdossett@herefordshire.gov.uk
