A photo of the record office building

Herefordshire Archive Service

As you can see from the headings on the left, we offer you more than 'just' a Record Office. Click on the appropriate heading for more details.

The Record Office in Harold Street is our base and is sign-posted off the A438 (Ledbury Road) and the B4224 (Hampton Bishop, Mordiford, Fownhope Road) on the outskirts of the city to the south-east. There is also a 'How to Find Us Map' which can be found in the 'Planning To Visit Us' section. Just click on the link to the right of this page.

Important Notices:

The registers showing property valuations in Herefordshire under the Finance Act 1910 are to be microfilmed.  This will have a number of benefits for users:

  • You will be able to look at these important records in the searchroom without having to wait for the originals to be produced.
  • It will be possible to make prints of relevant entries using our microfilm printers.
  • No more dirty hands and clothes (the registers are suffering from 'red rot' a common condition for leather bound volumes).

Perhaps more important - the registers will be spared the damaging process of being moved around the building.  We want to ensure that this valuable resource for local history survives into the future.

We will be removing the registers temporarily in two consignments from Tuesday 7 July.  Each group of registers will be unavailable for a period of three weeks from that date.  There is a link on the right to the pdf list that describes all the registers involved.  Our plan is to have the registers in the range AG9/1-55 microfilmed in the first batch and those in the range AG9/55-104 in the second.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused while the registers are unavailable during this process.

From 1st June Herefordshire Record Office will change its opening hours to:

 Monday    Closed
 Tuesday    9.15 a.m. - 4.45 p.m.
 Wednesday  10.00 a.m. - 4.45 p.m.
 Thursday    9.15 a.m. - 4.45 p.m.
 Friday    9.15 a.m. - 4.45 p.m.

 Saturday (2nd
 in the month)

   9.15 a.m. - 4.45 p.m.

The telephone will continue to be answered and e-mails picked up on the closed Mondays.  These altered hours will allow Archive Service staff to carry out further work on essential background tasks such as cataloguing and indexing, production of other finding aids, website development and conservation.

There will initially be a 6 month trial with a review in December 2009 - all comments are welcomed.

For further details re the new opening hours contact Elizabeth Semper O'Keefe on 01432 260750 or e-mail esemper@herefordshire.gov.uk.
