Leave the railway station car park via Station Approach, keeping to the left until the road takes you past Rockfield DIY store and the entrance to Morrisons car park. Just before Station Approach joins the busy Commercial Road, use the pedestrian crossing at the entrance of Station Approach and then carry on directly along Commercial Road, keeping the walls of Morrisons car park on your right.
Cross Commercial Road at the next pedestrian crossing, almost opposite Stonebow Road (the main approach road to the County Hospital). You will immediately come to a second pedestrian crossing, use this to cross Stonebow Road, and then continue straight on along Commercial Road, carefully crossing the main entrance to the bus station on your left. Carry on past the cinema and nightclub, and then turn left into Union Walk passing the travel agents.
At the top of Union Walk you will see a sign pointing to the hospital and a pedestrian alleyway, which is a continuation of Union Walk, do not turn right into Kyrle Street, but carry straight on past the rear entrance of the County hospital, and into the lane. This lane passes between the hospital on your left and the rear gardens of houses on your right.
You will leave this lane via some steps that lead onto Ledbury Road, immediately turn right, and carry on the short distance until you cross the entrance to Central Avenue. Cross the Ledbury Road at this point into Portfield Street, which should lie directly in front of you. Walk down Portfield Street, taking the first right turn past some bungalows, this leads you into Clive Street.
At the bottom of Clive Street you will come to the junction with the busy Eign Road, a confectionery supplies shop should be immediately to your left at this point. Carefully cross Eign Road and then turn left, walking the short distance until you come to a small road on your right, called Bartonsham Road.
Walk straight down Bartonsham Road, past the Chinese takeaway, and immediately in front of you is Harold Street and the Record Office car park.
Leave the bus station carefully by the car park at the rear, turning left past the café into Union Walk. (Continue from point B above).
Standing with your back to the entrance of the Old House in High Town turn to face your left. Now proceed straight on passing the Post Office on your right and St. Peter’s Church on your left until you arrive at the end of the pedestrianised area.
Cross the entrance to Offa Street and carry straight on down St. Owen’s Street passing the Town Hall on your right. As you continue down St. Owen’s Street you will pass the entrance to Barroll Street and then St. John’s Methodist Church.
Continue straight on crossing first the junction of St. Owen’s Street and Cantilupe Street and then shortly afterwards the junction of Mill Street and St. Owen’s Street. After carefully crossing these junctions continue directly on passing the Fire Station on your left and then the Victory Inn on your right.
Proceed straight on and in a fairly short distance you should cross the entrances to Grove Road, Grenfell Road and St. James’ Road, whilst on your left you will pass St. Giles’ Almshouses. If you look across the road at the end of the row of almshouses and on the corner of Ledbury Road you should see a sign directing you down Eign Road (B4224) to the County Archives and the TA Centre.
Continue directly onwards down what is now Eign Road, you should pass the First Church of Christ, Scientist on your right. Take the next immediate right hand turn into the short Bartonsham Road, passing the Chinese takeaway on your right. You will emerge onto Harold Street and directly in front of you on the other side of the road is the Herefordshire Record Office.
From the Tourist Office entrance carefully cross what appears to be a pedestrianised area but is actually the junction of Gwynne Street and King Street, immediately in front of you will be the entrance to Cathedral Close.
Carry straight on across the close, keeping the Cathedral on your right. You should cross a small car park used by the Cathedral School until you come to a set of metal railings that mark the end of the close. Take the opening on the right and proceed into Castle Street before almost immediately taking the turning on the right into Quay Street.
Walk along Quay Street until you see the sign for Castle Green, you will emerge into a grassy area flanked by the short Castle Hill Street and the end of Quay Street. Continue along Quay Street, passing The Friends of Castle Green information boards on the wall to your right. Proceed through the concrete bollards that mark the end of Quay Street and continue up the slope between two hedges and Castle Cliff on your right.
At the top of this short slope you will emerge onto Castle Green proper, keep to the right and pass the Castle Green Training Centre. Continue straight on passing three wooden benches until the pathway slopes down to meet the Mill Street and Nelson Street junction. Carry on straight through four green bollards into Nelson Street.
Proceed along Nelson Street passing on your right the entrances to Wye Way, Nightingale Way, Florence Gardens and finally River Close, do not turn into any of these entrances. At the end of Nelson Street you will reach the Harold Street and Green Street junction, cross the road carefully and carry straight on into Harold Street, you should pass Bartonsham Stores on your right.
After a short distance you should pass the Volunteer Inn on your left, carry straight on. Across the road on your right you will notice a fenced off green area and then an entrance to the Hereford and Worcester Cadet Force HQ. Carry straight on until you reach the junction of Harold Street and Bartonsham Road and immediately to your right, across Harold Street, is the entrance to Herefordshire Record Office.
