Planning Your Visit to the Record Office

Facilities and Some Points to Note

  • It may be necessary to book, and a reader ticket will be required. Please see the relevant sections to the left for more details.
  • Please be aware that no bags/handbags are allowed in the searchroom, unless you need to bring them in with you initially, for the purposes of showing identification in order to obtain a reader ticket. We provide lockers on the ground floor in which you may then leave your bags and any other belongings you do not require for your research. A large clear plastic zip-up pouch can be found in each locker for your convenience, which you may bring up to the searchroom with you.
  • We have a lift available for those people who cannot manage the stairs to our first floor searchroom.
  • We have a car park, with spaces for blue badge holders immediately adjacent to our building. There is also a loop system installed in the searchroom for those using hearing aids.
  • We do not have a refreshment room, but there is a vending machine in the entrance hall where you may obtain a hot drink, and chairs where you may sit to eat sandwiches. (Drinks currently cost 40p each. Please remember that this machine does not give change, so be sure to bring enough with you.) Alternatively, we are only 5 or 10 minutes from various cafes etc. in the city centre.
  • This year we will close for two weeks for our stocktaking exercise, from 22nd November until 3rd December inclusive.  We reopen as normal on Tuesday 7th December at 9.15am.

If you have any queries please contact us.  Our address, telephone number and e-mail link can be found on the right at the top of this page.
