Other sites run by English Heritage

Besides the castles at Goodrich, Longtown and Wigmore, sites maintained by English Heritage in Herefordshire include:

 



Mortimer's Cross Water Mill

Mortimer's Cross Water Mill (Sites and Monuments Record number 342): A rare one-man-operated 18th-century water mill in part working order. Nearby, there are gardens and woodland walks, and a stone weir. It is situated 7 miles north-west of Leominster on the B4362 (Ordnance Survey grid reference SO 4262 6373). Arthur's Stone

Arthur's Stone, Dorstone, a Neolithic burial chamber Arthur's Stone (SMR 1528): A stunning Neolithic cromlech burial chamber formed of large slabs of stone. It is located 7 miles east of Hay-on-Wye, off the B4348 near Dorstone (OS grid reference SO 3189 4312).

Edvin Loach Old Church

Edvin Loach Old Church (SMR 1154): A peaceful and isolated churchyard containing the ruins of an 11th century and later church. The church was built within the earthworks of a Norman motte and bailey castle. There is a Victorian church nearby. The church is situated 4 miles north of Bromyard, on an unclassified road off the B4203 (OS grid reference SO 6621 5845).

 


 

Rotherwas Chapel

Rotherwas Chapel (SMR 547): The Roman Catholic chapel of the Bodenham family, dating from the 14th and 16th centuries. It has a fine Elizabethan timber roof and a rebuilt 18th-century tower. The Victorian interior decoration and furnishings are by the Pugins. The chapel is 1.5 miles south-east of Hereford on the B4399, turn left into Chapel Road (OS grid reference SO 5362 3833).
