Longtown lies in the foothills of the Black Mountains, about half way between Hereford and Abergavenny (Ordnance Survey grid reference SO 322 290). The greater part of the motte and bailey is in the guardianship of English Heritage and is accessible to the public free of charge all year round, during daylight hours. Both the castle and a large area of the borough are Scheduled (legally protected) as an Ancient Monument. There is limited car parking. It is recommended that sturdy shoes are worn and that children are closely supervised at all times.
