The council's current planning policies are set out in the Unitary Development Plan (UDP), which was adopted on 23 March 2007.
The UDP provides the basis for the council's actions as local planning authority up to 2011. This means that we primarily use the UDP's policies to make planning application decisions. The UDP also determines policy on such matters as the distribution of housing and employment, and the conservation of the environment.
The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 introduced a new planning system - the Local Development Framework (LDF). There are transitional arrangements that provide for the UDP to operate as part of the county's LDF.
We are currently developing a Core Strategy that sets out the vision and objectives for the LDF and explains how the county is expected to develop up to 2031.
