Herefordshire Empty Property Strategy 2002 - 2005

Introduction

It is an interesting statistic, but did you know that in Britain today there are over half a million privately owned properties, and half of these have been empty for more than 6 months.

In Herefordshire alone, there are over 2,000 empty properties at any one time, 700 of which have been empty for more than one year.

Indeed, The Empty Homes Agency, an independent campaigning body, calculates that the cost to an owner of leaving the average three-bedroom property empty is around £8,000 per year.

The aim of this site is to give owners some ideas for utilising their empty property and to set out some of the assistance that may be available from the Herefordshire Council.

Why Does The Council Care About Empty Properties?

Bringing empty properties back into use creates a "win - win" situation for all parties concerned:

  • It reduces the pressure to build on green-field sites
  • It removes "eyesores" and a source of nuisance
  • It gives owners an income
  • It gives a home to local people

Herefordshire Council now has an Empty Property Strategy 2002 - 2005 that is available from the resources box on this page.
