Homelessness FAQs

What is homelessness and how can I prevent it?
You are homeless if you do not have a home. If you do not have any rights to stay where you are living, having a roof over your head will not stop you from being homeless.

How can I be intentionally homeless?
Your Council may consider you to be intentionally homeless if you have become homeless as a result of something you have deliberately done, or failed to do.

I am being evicted – what do I do?
Getting advice immediately will help you to stay within your property longer. Via a housing/homelessness advisor, you may be able to negotiate with your landlord or access benefits to allow you to stay within the property.

How do I apply as homeless – what will happen?
If a person is homeless or threatened with homelessness and approaches the Council for help it has to provide them with advice and assistance.

What are my rights as a homeless person?
If you are homeless or threatened with eviction, you may have legal rights to stay in or return to your home. Apart from being entitled to help from the Council, you may also be entitled to help from Social Care.

How can my Council help me?
If you do become homeless or are likely to become homeless within 28 days, your Council's legal obligations to you will depend upon your personal circumstances and the reasons why you became homeless.

I’m a traveller – where do I go for help?
Homelessness in the case of travellers may not necessarily occur because of a lack of accommodation. For travellers, lack of somewhere to place their caravan may cause homelessness.

Where do I go for help and advice in Herefordshire?
In the first instance ring the general contact number on the contact details page and a member of staff will try and help you.

What other regional and national agencies can help me?
Select the Links and Signposting page in the left hand menu on this page for further information.
