The Herefordshire Process
The first step towards the production of a local BAP was the preparation of 'Herefordshire's Biodiversity: Audit and Priorities'. This involved the collation of information on the status of species and habitats present in the county from a variety of available sources, including many local naturalists. This information was evaluated using standard criteria and local priorities, which include national priorities occurring in the county, were identified. These comprise 156 priority species (of which 59 are also national priorities), 18 priority habitats (all of these are national priorities, although one habitat has been divided into two) and 101 species for which research is recommended to clarify their status. Recommendations were made for the production of action plans.
A full list of species of conservation concern in Herefordshire has been drawn up in the Herefordshire Audit and Priorities Report. Ecological survey work in the past and present, which is held by the Herefordshire Biological Records Centre, provides the most up-to-date picture of how these species are faring.
