Working in partnership for the people of Herefordshire

Home Care

Care in your own home is offered to people who require assistance with personal care such as washing or dressing, or in some instances, help in managing finances.

A Community Care Assessment will need to be carried out to determine your eligibility for services (this is explained in our Assessment & Care Management leaflet).

Paying for Services

How we charge for non residential care

Social Services are funded by the Government and through Council tax, but the Government also expects us to recover some of the costs by charging for services. They tell us how to do this, but they have set a limit on how much we can charge. This will always be less than it costs us to give you the service. Some people will not need to pay anything - we will ask you for details of your finances to make this judgement.

People who have savings and capital above £23,000 are not eligible for financial assistance towards non-residential care services from Herefordshire Council.

Service Charges April 2009 - April 2010

Where a person meets the eligibility criteria for the provision of care services, meals, or transport arrangements, e.g. to a day centre, the following charges apply.

Our rates are:

Non residential care service charges
Service Fee
Home Care £14.15 per hour
Day Care £4.15 per day
Meals £2.65 per meal
Meals (WRVS "Meals on Wheels" £2.65 per meal
Transport £1.30 for each journey (£2.60 return)

Our booklet, "Paying for services" explains that you may be asked to pay towards a service arranged by us.

How much you are charged depends on your financial situation. Some people will not pay anything.

Everyone who has meals, either at home or in a day centre, or is getting transport from us, will be asked to pay the standard flat rate charge for these services.

A financial assessment will be carried out so that we can calculate how much you should pay towards any home or day care services provided, and advice on any benefits you may be entitled to will be given to you at the same time.

Our Charging Team will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Their telephone number is in the booklet.
