Children with disabilities

Who are we?

The Kite Centre comprises several specialist teams, which cover the whole county of Herefordshire, supporting children, young people and families whose lives are affected by disability and/or chronic illness.

This includes:

  • Community nurses for children and young people with complex health needs and life-limiting conditions.
  • Community nurses for children and young people with learning disabilities
  • Family support workers
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • A clinical psychologist (Learning Disabilities)
  • Social workers
  • Administrative support

Number 1 Ledbury Road (overnight short break residential unit) is also located on the same site.

The Kite Centre is open on Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

What do we do?

We consider the needs arising from your child/young person’s disability and/or long-term condition, through our SPORT (single point of referral team) process. This multi-agency process helps us to co-ordinate our assessments, which in turn informs our service planning and delivery, taking into consideration the individual needs and wishes of your family.

As both children/young people and their family’s needs change over time, we review our input regularly to check that it still remains appropriate and effective.

We can also offer parent carer assessments, which consider how parents who care for their disabled child/young person can be supported to continue providing care.

Precise details of the range and level of services offered differs between individual children/young people and their families, because of their unique needs, however examples of help that may be offered include:

  • Advice about specialist equipment or adaptations to your home
  • Family support/relationship building
  • Nursing care for children and young people with complex and long-term health needs, and support for their carers
  • Access to a range of short break activities and Respite care
  • Specialist advice, support and guidance
  • Supporting children, young people and their parents to develop normal problem solving skills
  • Therapy to promote normal movement and function

How do you get help?

You might want to contact us yourself or someone who thinks that we could give help can do so, with your permission.

First we make sure you qualify for our services.

Then, after talking to everyone concerned, we work out how we might help. We won't arrange anything unless you agree.

If your child is not eligible for Kite Centre services, we will try to suggest other places and people who can help.

Please feel free to contact us to find out more about the services we provide.

Aims of the Kite Centre
