Carer's assessment

A Carer’s assessment is your opportunity to tell Social Services about things that could make caring easier for you. As a carer you have a legal right to an assessment of your own needs.  The assessment is not a test about your ability to care, it helps identify the physical, emotional and practical help you may need to then be able to carry on your caring role. You have the right to have your needs considered when decisions are being made about support for the person you care for. This will include any education, training, work or leisure activity that you would like to take part in.

Areas to consider for discussion before your assessment

  • Are you struggling to find any/enough time for yourself.
  • The effect caring is having on your health.
  • How it’s affecting your relationship with others.
  • Sources for additional help via local or national organisations.
  • Whether the person you’re caring for is getting enough help.

For more information regarding an assessment and who to contact please read the Who Is A Carer leaflet
