Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

Who’s responsible for maintaining stiles and gates?

Answer:

Stiles and gates on a public right of way are the responsibility of the landowner.

However, the council is obliged by law to provide not less than 25% of the cost of installing and maintaining stiles and gates.

In practice, this very often means that the council supplies landowners with new stiles and gates for the landowner to install.

You should report any problems with gates and stiles to streets@herefordshire.gov.uk and our wardens will try to get them fixed.
