Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

Walkers keep leaving my gate open, can I lock the gate?

Answer:

No. Locking a gate across a public right of way is an offence under the Highways Act 1980 for which you could be prosecuted.

To overcome the problem of walkers leaving gates open you could install a self closing gate, these are available from any local supplier of gates. The Council can also supply you with "Please close the Gate" signs free of charge.

Contact for further information: Assistant Rights of Way Officer, telephone: 01432 260572 or see the Public Rights of Way section.
