Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

Why do I have to pay so much Council Tax when I don’t use any of the services?

Answer:

Council tax is a ‘tax for local services’ not a ‘charge for services’ and forms part of the national taxation system.

Council Tax accounts for only 3% of the national taxation income, although it seems higher! Herefordshire Council provides a wide and varied range of mainly statutory services to the community as a whole.

Many people are unaware of some of these services until they are in need of them or benefit from them without realising it.

People make greater use of services at different periods of their lives e.g. many households with school age children will receive more in services than they contribute to in those particular years.
