Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

Recent media stories suggest councils are owed millions of pounds in arrears - why is Herefordshire Council not collecting arrears?

Answer:

Local authorities have been responsible for collecting council tax since April 1992 and are responsible for collecting billions of pounds each year. Recent media articles have highlighted levels of arrears of council tax across the country, but have failed to highlight what a small percentage is actually outstanding.

Herefordshire Council has always tried to recover arrears of council tax and will use all the legal powers the Council Tax regulations allow. Collection rates of council tax in Herefordshire are well above the national average and, whilst levels of arrears exist, they are at a low level considering the amount of tax the authority collects.
